v            Registration

Mercy Foundation (MF) is an NGO functioning in Trincomalee district. It was founded on 13th, July, 2005 with a view to ameliorate the socioeconomic conditions of the rural folk affected by war and by natural disasters (Tsunami) in the Trincomalee district.  (Trincomalee district has a land area of 2,600 sq. km and a population around 350,000.  According to recent estimates, over sixty-five percent of the villagers are below sustenance level. 

 

The district was affected economically and socio-culturally by the ethnic armed conflict since 1983 and by Tsunami in 2004 December.) 

 

Prior to the incorporation of MF, Rev. S.Rajavel, the founder of MF, was engaged in humanitarian services through his parish, Jesus Blesses Full Gospel Church, in Uppuveli.  They organized a night school to teach the disadvantaged and underprivileged children in Uppuveli, and outlying villages.

 

The services carried out by them include:

§         Organizing Day-Care Centres

§         Construction of latrines

§         Supply of school equipment

§         Construction of Wells

§         Supply of dry ration to affected families

§         Supply of bicycles to promote self-employment opportunities

§         Supply of clothing to the poor people.

§         Conduct Peace Programme.

 

v     Capacity of the Foundation:

The Foundation can handle projects costing SLR 50 million.  We employ 6 field officers who supervise/ monitor the project activities – each project officer has competence in a specific field of activity covered by MF.  In addition, MF employs Consultants in the different fields such as sanitation and construction.  The administrative and financial units are also supported by efficient staff.

 

v     Sect oral experience in Water and Sanitation:

The Foundation has been engaged in  Water and Sanitation projects and has executed such projects at Pulliankulam ( 12 million SLR), wells at Iqubal Nagar (1.65 million SLR), 200 Septic Tanks at Kanniya (2.9 million SLR),  Sanitation in Town and Gravets Division ( 2 million SLR).  We have another ongoing Sanitation project funded by UNICEF.

 

v     Experience in Construction

In addition to the Sanitation Projects referred to above (which involve construction and engineering expertise), the Foundation has satisfactorily completed the Housing complex at Kanniya costing 17.2 million SLR.  We have also satisfactorily executed construction of roads (2 million SLR).

 

v     Experience in rehabilitation and community restoration in the North and East:

All our projects including construction and sanitation have been addressed to the rehabilitation of the war or natural disaster affected people in the North and East. Further, we devote much attention towards peace building and ethnic harmony.

A Branch of MF has been opened in Vavuniya in Aug 2006.  It is located at Kurumankadu.  It functions under the direction and control of the Head-Office in Trincomalee. 

 

The Executive in charge is the District Director, Mr.S.Rajapart (His contact telephone number is 0779602822) He is assisted by a Project Officer, an administrative officer and a Financial Assistant.  The support staffs consist of two field officers, two management assistants, a book-keeper and an office assistant.  The planning and formulation of projects is coordinated by the Managing Director at the Head Office. 

 

The District Director is responsible for execution and monitoring of the projects in Vavuniya.  The Financial Director supervises and controls the financial transactions.
